The tax deadline is right around the corner—don’t let it sneak up on you. Whether you’re nearly done or haven’t started, here’s a few last-minute tax tips to help you recognize what you should focus on now:

1. Don’t Put It Off Any Longer
If you haven’t started your return, it’s time. Gathering documents, reviewing deductions, and making sure everything is accurate can take longer than expected. Last-minute rushes often lead to errors—or missed opportunities to save.
2. File Even If You Can’t Pay
Can’t afford your full tax bill? File your return anyway. The penalty for not filing is far worse than the penalty for not paying. You can set up a payment plan with the IRS if needed.
3. Avoid Common Mistakes
As the deadline nears, it’s easy to make simple errors. Double-check:
Social Security numbers
Bank routing and account numbers (for payments or refunds)
All sources of income (especially side gigs or freelance work)
That you’ve signed your return (if mailing it)
4. Consider an Extension—But Know the Rules
If you’re not ready, file for an extension (Form 4868). That gives you six extra months to file—but not to pay. You’ll still need to estimate your tax liability and pay what you can by the deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
5. Max Out Last-Minute Contributions
You can still make 2024 contributions to:
A Traditional IRA (if eligible)
A Health Savings Account (HSA)
Both may lower your taxable income and reduce your overall tax bill.
6. Small Business Owner? Get Your Books in Order
If you’re self-employed or run a small business, now’s the time to double-check your records. Make sure income and expenses are categorized correctly—and that you’re not overlooking deductions you’re entitled to.
7. When You Need More Than Last-Minute Tax Tips
Tax software is great, but if you’re behind or things feel a bit too complicated, don’t try to go it alone. A professional can save you time, reduce your stress, and help you avoid costly mistakes.
